On request of the Turkish Chess Federation, ECU President Boris Kutin has
decided to postpone the European Individual Women’s Championship 2003. A
letter of Horst Metzing, Board Member of the European Chess Union, follows
The ECU Board has closely been monitoring the political situation in the
Middle East. We have been aware of the fact that the war on Iraq might
influence even the western part of Turkey.
As you know the European Individual Women’s Championship was scheduled in
Antalya for the period of 29 March to 12 April 2003. We all really do not
realise what will happen in this region within the next days or months. Our
aim has to be the interest and the security of our players. Furthermore we
have to respect the position of organizers and national federations.
Thus on request of the Turkish Chess Federation, our President Boris Kutin has
decided to postpone the European Individual Women’s Championship 2003.
The new dates will be announced as soon as possible. The Turkish Chess
Federation might be prepared to hold this championship in connection with the
European Individual Championship that is supposed to take place in Istanbul
from 29 May until 14 June 2003.
We are sorry for this decision that might cause inconveniences concerning the
flight reservations and timetables of the players. But we hope that all
federations and players will understand this step.
